• PEDS is an advocacy group dedicated to making communities in the Atlanta region great places to walk. We go the extra mile to inspire pedestrian-friendly funding and policy changes. By partnering with others, weve become a strong voice for people who walk throughout the region and state. Weve also provided the expertise and encouragement needed to inspire pedestrian-friendly policies. Our programs promote safe, enjoyable streets and walkable communities. Safe Routes to Transit is making safe crossings at transit stop a local, regional and state priority Campaign for Safe Sidewalks encourages Atlanta to fix broken sidewalks. It also promotes adding sidewalks to streets important to pedestrians. Walk Smart / Drive Smart promotes increased compliance with crosswalk laws and speed limits. Neighborhood Walking Activists gives local leaders the tools they need to to inspire people in their community to speak up, organize fun, high-visibility events and make a difference. When PEDS was founded in 1996, pedestrians were not on the Atlanta regions radar screen. Since then, weve inspired many changes people in Georgia now take for granted. High-visibility crosswalks, in-street crosswalk signs and median refuge islands are just a few examples. As pedestrian advocates, we focus on both the bad and the good. We encourage transportation engineers to transform roads designed for cars only into places less deadly to people on foot. And together with partners, we work to make good places great.
