• Access Health Louisiana (AHL) has played a significant and ever-expanding role of providing affordable and accessible primary care services in Louisiana since 2002. A network of not-for-profit health centers, Access Health Louisiana began operations three years prior to Hurricane Katrina, when St. Charles Community Health Center began serving the public needs of St. Charles Parish. Since then, the AHL network has grown to provide adult and pediatric services at over 20 sites located in nine parishes. A Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) network, Access Health Louisiana provides comprehensive primary and preventive care, including medical, dental and behavioral health/substance abuse services to persons of all ages, regardless of ability to pay or health insurance status. Evidence shows that access to primary care can help people live longer, healthier lives. Studies provided by the Americans Family Physicians suggest that as many as 127,617 deaths per year in the United States could be averted through an increase in the number of primary care physicians. In areas of the country where there are more primary care providers per person, death rates for cancer, heart disease, and stroke are lower and people are less likely to be hospitalized. Access Health Louisiana continues to expand its services to South Louisiana by governing and operating neighborhood health centers that are easy to access. AHL sites include the St Charles Community Health Centers, the St. Tammany Community Health Centers, St. Bernard Community Health Center, Belle Chasse Community Health Center, the Ruth U. Fertel/Tulane Community Health Center, South Broad Community Health Center and Washington Community Health Center. AHL will soon be opening the Tangipahoa Community Health Center in Hammond and also operates eight School Based Wellness Centers in three Parishes.
