Bearings Bike Shop

Description

• The Bearings Bike Shop is a non-profit organization helping to transform Atlanta's Westside that focuses on the voices that influence Atlantas urban youth. We take in donated bikes and then invite kids to earn a bike of their own through our Learn and Earn program, as kids earn a bike a relationship is formed. We now operate 3 Learn and Earn bike shops across Atlanta's notorious Westside. The shops operate 5 days week and is open to kids across the Westside and their communities to learn how to keep their bike running while building community. With nearly 300 kids enrolled in our 3 bike shops the Bearings Bike Shop is uniquely focused on developing community with urban youth and among neighbors across racial, social, and economic lines. By connecting at-risk kids with young professionals and other positive voices in their neighborhood, we are strengthening the communities in which these kids live. We believe every child is being mentored by someone, whether its a positive influence or a negative influence someone will guide the next generation. The streets are constantly lying to youth and can lure the next generation to a life of crime, violence, gangs, drugs, laziness and death. Many kids are growing up failing academically and find themselves in spiritual, relational and material poverty. This leads to believing they have no value and no one believing in them. We operate in 3 of Atlanta's most distressed zip codes and in the 5th and 25th most dangerous neighborhoods in the country. We believe the best defenses against the negative forces are a strong offense and presence within the communities where kids are being connected with positive influences at the neighborhood level. We are that influence. Through the bike shop job skills, discipline, accountability and character are formed while long-term relationships are formed with the kids.
