• The Mt. Rainier Railroad and Logging Museum is a steam-powered heritage railroad and museum operating in Washington State between the towns of Elbe and Mineral. We are the longest continuously operating steam train railroad in the Pacific Northwest. The railroad travels on tracks that pass through the foothills and forest south of Mount Rainier. The museum highlights a unique chapter of Pacific Northwest History, life in railroad logging camp. Before there were aviation giants, coffee sirens or global tech firms, railroads and timber were economic drivers in the early days of Washington State. The depot, gift shop and ticket office are located in Elbe. The museum is located in Mineral. The railroad currently has four steam locomotives in service, as well as an historic F9 diesel-electric locomotive. Most of the railroad's engines are geared steam locomotives. These specialized types of steam enginesShay, Heisler, Climax, and Willamette locomotives were used in the early 20th century for logging. We seek to preserve and operate historic locomotives and related logging technology in order to present visitors with a sense of a bygone logging era critical to the development of the Pacific Northwest.
