Get Full AccessDescription
- Working Dogs for Conservation (WD4C) is a non-profit organization putting the keen canine nose to work to wildlife and wild places around the world. We train the worlds best conservation detection dogs to locate specific wildlife scats, live animals and plants. We do it to save the world; They do it for the love of a ball. When combined with technologies available for the analysis of DNA extracted from scat, scientists can verify species, sex, and potentially determine population size, home range, paternity, and kinship while the analysis of endocrine extracted from scat can determine the reproductive status of individuals. As leaders in the field, WDC has worked with more than 30 conservation groups in 5 different countries on projects for 20 species of wild animals and plants. Many of these projects have been ground-breaking within the field of conservation biology. To boot, many of our specially trained dogs are rescued from shelters or frustrated owners, thus we save dogs that in turn help save wild life and wild places.
