Operating as the U.S. AbilityOne Commission® since Oct. 1, 2011, the Committee for Purchase From People Who Are Blind or Severely Disabled is the independent federal agency that administers the AbilityOne® Program.The mission of the agency is to create employment opportunities for people who are blind or have significant disabilities through the manufacture and delivery of over 3,000 products and services to the federal government. Fifteen members of the Commission are appointed by the President of the United States, with eleven members representing the Departments of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Education, Labor, Justice, Agriculture, Veterans Affairs, and Defense, as well as the General Services Administration (GSA). There are also four private citizen members who represent nonprofit agency employees who are blind and who are familiar with obstacles to employment of persons who are blind, who understand obstacles to employment of persons with disabilities and who represent nonprofit agency employees with significant disabilities. The Commission is assisted in administering the program by National Industries for the Blind (NIB) and SourceAmerica®, and an AbilityOne network of more than 550 local nonprofit agencies across the country.
