• MISSION & OVERVIEWThe mission of the Norwalk Emergency Shelter, Inc. dba The Open Door Shelter (ODS)is to effectively address the complex needs of the homeless and working poor. To provide safe, sanitary shelter care, food, clothing, and furniture to needy men, women, and families; assist shelter residents in attaining housing, jobs, counseling and various treatment services; provide transitional, affordable, and permanent supportive housing; and to foster residents' growth toward independence and responsibility.ODS is the only emergency shelter and has the only soup kitchen in Norwalk, CT. Consequently, our 95-bed facility has either been at full capacity or beyond for the past three years. Therefore, we have arranged to nightly accommodate homeless individuals at our local overflow facility.We address the widespread concern of homelessness, by providing shelter, transitional and permanent supportive housing, operating a soup kitchen, food pantry, clothing room, and making available affordable housing for low-income earning individuals and families. Additionally, we employ a full-time Housing Coordinator and offer Case Management Services to all of our clients. We also have an Outreach Program; through which our Case Managers along with shelter clients travel throughout the community to areas where the homeless are known to congregate to encourage them into the Shelter for life-improving services.
