- Health care is the maintenance or improvement of health via the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease, illness, injury, and other physical and mental impairments in human beings. Preventive health care (alternately preventive medicine or prophylaxis) consists of measures taken for disease prevention, as opposed to disease treatment. Many of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States can be prevented. However, substantial gaps in the delivery of effective preventive health care in the U.S. remain. The NPHCA's mission is to bridge the gap between the medical and fitness communities to create a national delivery system for preventive health care services.
