We work closely with civil society, governments and the private sector to develop novel frameworks and enable results on the ground.In just a few short years, our flagship program, the Verified Carbon Standard Program, has become the worlds leading voluntary greenhouse gas program. In 2005, VCS was founded by a collection of business and environmental leaders who saw a need for greater quality assurance in voluntary carbon markets. Our founding partners - The Climate Group, International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) and The World Economic Forum - convened a team of global carbon market experts to draft the first VCS requirements. World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) joined the effort soon after. By 2008, with the VCS Standard becoming more widely adopted, the Board of Directors named David Antonioli the organizations first Chief Executive Officer. Soon after in 2009, VCS incorporated in Washington D.C as a non-profit NGO. Today, a growing staff with operatives around the world manages the ongoing operations and development of VCS and its standards and programs. This growing staff provides VCS with an unmatched ability to innovate and expand into new markets. We rely on expert committees to ensure existing and new requirements reflect the most current knowledge and global best practice. With input from our experts, we steadily expand the scope of VCS to respond to the need for new, innovative and trusted accounting tools.
