- The San Diego County Water Authority is a public agency serving the San Diego region as a wholesale supplier of water from the Colorado River and Northern California. The Water Authority works through its 24 member agencies to provide a safe, reliable water supply to support the region's $218 billion economy and the quality of life of 3.2 million residents.The 24 member agencies are represented through the Water Authority's Board of Directors. A member of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors also serves as a Board representative. The Water Authority was formed in 1944 by the California State Legislature, and operates under the County Water Authority Act, which can be found in the California State Water Code. The Water Authority is one member of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, and in its history the Water Authority has come to supply up to 90% of San Diego County's water.
