• Temple Shalom of Newton, Massachusetts is a Reform Jewish congregation and a member of the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ). Our Temple was founded in 1950 by 225 families. From the outset we have had a close relationship with the First Unitarian Church, where our services were originally held, and with the Second Congregational Church where our religious school was held. Then, in 1956, our Temple completed construction of its Sanctuary, Social Hall and Religious School at its current location 175 Temple Street in Newton, MA.In 1994 we began a Capital and Endowment Fund campaign. The generous response of our congregants enabled us to expand and renovate our Temple. Temple Shalom now has several new classrooms and meeting rooms, an expanded chapel and is handicapped accessible. Today, the Temple has grown from its original 225 families to around 800 families! In 1999. Rabbi Eric Gurvis became our Senior Rabbi, replacing Rabbi Whiman. Rabbi David Widzer joined us as Assistant Rabbi in 2000. Rabbi Michelle Pearlman replaced Rabbi Widzer in 2006. Then, in 2010, Rabbi Neil Hirsch joined us as Assistant Rabbi, replacing Rabbi Pearlman. In 2014, Rabbi Laura Abrasley joined us as our new Assistant Rabbi.
