• ASSET: Americans Standing for the Simplification of the Estate TaxASSET is a grass-roots non-profit organization dedicated to reforming the estate tax collection methodology. The current estate tax is inefficient, collecting merely 1% of the total revenue of the IRS. In effect, the estate tax captures private businesses, family farms and the ill prepared, who cannot possibly have 40% (or even 35%) of the value of their business available in cash on the death of the private owner. Fortune 500 are not subject to the estate tax, and worse the super-rich never pay the estate tax. Instead, they liquidate and shield their assets through tax avoidance strategies like trusts, and never pay the estate tax. The purpose of ASSET is to create a coalition of private businesses, farmers, ranchers and all their employees to change the collection method for the estate tax through a grass roots effort during tax reform on Capitol Hill. Whether you believe estate or death tax is immoral, we know it is an inefficient tax. We need to keep our allies on the battlefield while the estate tax still exists and the current law causes more harm, and in fact more is spent avoiding the tax than the tax collects. ASSET stops job losses and changes the estate tax debate.
