• Founded in San Francisco in 1969, Oceanic Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of marine life in ecologically important areas across the globe. Over the past four decades we have developed a unique and effective approach that combines science, community engagement, and experience-driven outreach to create lasting change in the places we work. Our strengths are engaging people in conservation through experience, contributing to the establishment of marine reserves, and supporting community-based conservation initiatives.Oceans are the Earth's most important natural asset. They cover 70% of Earth's surface, contain 97% of all water, and provide 99% of Earth's habitable space. They also provide more than half of our oxygen, supply the primary protein source for more than 1 billion people, provide millions of jobs, and regulate our climate.Yet the oceans need our help. Almost 80% of fish stocks are fully- to over-exploited, depleted, or in a state of collapse. Plastic pollution has created vast garbage patches throughout the world's oceans. Hundreds of species are threatened with extinction. And only 2% of the oceans are under protection.But it's not too late to make a difference. The future is ours to create.
