• International Deaf Emergency, Inc. (IDE) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization in the United States of America (USA) and, is an International Disabled Peoples Organization (DPO) recognized as an International Member of the World Deaf Federation (WFD) that has direct consultative status with the United Nations (UN). IDEs mission is to bridge the language, communication and relationship gaps between persons who are deaf and hard of hearing and emergency service providers facing disasters including (i) pre- disaster preparedness and mitigation, (ii) rescue and relief in the context of disaster and (iii) post disaster rehabilitation, reconstruction and recovery.Established in 2010 after the Massive earthquake that strikes Haiti, IDE immediately identified a number of gaps in communication and the needs for Deaf persons to gain access to the emergency services provided by various emergency response entities. As a result, IDE led creating the establishment of a temporary and fully inclusive sheltered site to accommodate 400 deaf earthquake survivors in Port Au Prince, along with critical livelihood assistance from several organizations such International Red Cross, French Embassy in Haiti, Water Mission International. While in the final long-term reconstruction and recovery phase, IDE partnered with the Mission of Hope in Haiti (MOH), 650 permanent houses with backyard were built in which 168 deaf earthquake survivors families eventually became the owners. Historically, Deaf people were often provided for without considering their abilities in helping to rebuild or to participate in the decision making process. IDE provided Deaf Haitian survivors many basic essential projects such as helping build shelter tents, collecting wood, cleaning the streets, and distributing small business development tools to benefit Deaf survivors and their families.
