Gisc - Grower Information Services Cooperative

Description

• Grower Information Services Cooperative (GiSC), a nationwide cooperative, was formed to assist GiSC members U.S. agriculture producers with the collection, retention, and delivery of INFORMATION. The guiding principle of GiSC is that growers produce the information related to their operations, and growers should have ownership in that information and should have control over who may access the information and how the information may be used.GiSC is similar to many agriculture cooperatives established to assist the growers in marketing products. GiSC will also assist in marketing a product: the growers information and data. Agriculture production consists of many by-products. One by-product of agriculture production is the data necessary to operate the farm and ranch. Data include many points of information: acreage reporting, crop loss from natural disasters, production reporting, etc. There is a growing consensus that this data is quite valuable. As a part of its commitment to its members, GiSC will also offer subscription based access to the AgPro-X Exchange. The AgPro-X Exchange will provide an easy and secure way for growers to store, organize, and access their data, files, documents, and other information. Through the AgPro-X Exchange, growers will also have the means to securely share information with trusted third parties as those growers see fit. Currently, there is a debate regarding how grower data should be utilized. One example of this debate is the growing concern of how grower data are handled by agribusinesses and others who sell equipment to growers that collects and transmits certain data to the vendor. Growers need to be actively involved in this debate as it begins to take shape. By joining GiSC, growers are building an organization with the authority, credibility and capability to establish and protect their digital rights in the data and information related to their agriculture operations .
