• Our organization's main objective is to promote and support the educational advancement of our community. To meet this goal LAWA raises funds to offer Educational Scholarships for higher education for Hispanic women and youth in our area. Since its inception in 1992, LAWA has awarded thousands of dollars to the local community. In addition, LAWA has created a program named Madres y Madrinas (Mothers and Godmothers) to work with young school age students, parents, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools teachers and administrators to assist in the academic development of Latino students. LAWA volunteers offer one-on-one tutoring and mentorship to students, and serve as a link between the schools and parents to facilitate communications and support families. Our goal is to instill the interest of pursuing higher education from early age and to make Latino parents more active in their childrens education development.LAWA has relationships with academic, community, and art organizations to work in collaboration to support educational programs. Our goal is to increase cultural awareness and increase minority enrollment in under and graduate college programs, as well as technical careers. Understanding that art is an intrinsic part of education, LAWA supports and instills the love for the arts since early age.
