• BARR (Building Assets, Reducing Risks) is a secondary school improvement model that provides schools with a comprehensive approach to meeting students academic, social, and emotional needs. BARR's social-emotional learning model is designed to decrease the incidence of academic failure, truancy, substance use, and disciplinary incidents among youth, specifically students in transitional years such as ninth grade. BARR changes the way the school operates, engages the school for the whole student by breaking the silos of information, and retains talent by supporting teachers to get back to the core of their profession--coordinated action to help students thrive. BARR helps educators better connect with their students and address the issues that cause students to dropout, fail courses, and/or engage in harmful behavior. BARR combines eight proven strategies into a new way to do school and helps schools to change their culture. Teachers and staff shift their perspectives to see that class grades, attendance, and other student data are not always the end goal, but rather symptoms of root issues. BARR empowers staff to view the whole-child by using the whole team of teachers. BARR has been awarded Investing in Innovation (i3) Development and Validation grants by the U.S. Department of Education. BARR has statistically significant outcomes from randomized controlled trials conducted in high schools nationwide. These outcomes include higher standardized test scores in reading and mathematics, improved passing rates courses, stronger relationships with teachers, and teachers having a greater understanding of students and feeling more supported by administration. Other outcomes include decreased suspensions, more AP and IB tests taken, decreased absenteeism, fewer students experiencing failure, decrease of risk behaviors, increase in school climate measures and improved graduation rates for schools that implemented BARR over time.
