- Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Sonia Plumb Dance Company endures in part because its so community-oriented. (The Hartford Courant) Deeply committed to education and community outreach, Plumb believes audiences of all ages can benefit from experiencing the creative process directly. The Company's school programs conform to Common Core State Standards and blend together movement with class curriculum. Teachers and principals have called their educational programs, right on target with the curriculum, and excellent, thorough, accurate and age-appropriate. The Company's programs are listed on CreativeGround.org, the New England States Touring roster and the Hartford Performs Artists in Education roster. They are also eligible for NEST grants. Artistic Director Sonia Plumb has received a National Teaching Artist Fellowship and Connecticut Commission on the Arts Fellowship and recognized as a Hartford Business Journals 40 under 40. Combining original choreography and collaborations with composers, musicians, poets, artists, and puppeteers, the Company continues to thrill audiences with a rich repertory. This year, it will be staging a season of events connected to Homers epic poem (The Odyssey), including free previews of the work in progress this summer, a library talk this fall, educational workshops for local schools beginning this fall, movement programs for students with Autism, pre-show conversations with local educators, and the full-length, multi-media dance based on The Odyssey this October in West Hartford and Old Saybrook. The Company is Artist in Residence at the University of Saint Joseph, West Hartford, CT. Sonia Plumb Dance Company is a nonprofit, 501(c)3.
