• Recess proposes a new model that fuses public space, studio space and exhibition space. Artists are given street level flex space, open to the public and free of charge. Recess Responds: Contemporary artwork, rather than existing in traditional forms is often site-specific, performance-based or ephemeral in nature. The traditional gallery space cannot always respond to the network of exchange in which artists work. Given these flexible modes of production, the artists studio is no longer bound to conventional space; the studio of the contemporary artist is the street, the gallery, or anywhere the practitioner choses to work. Recess's mission is to support the rigorous process of the contemporary artist by creating a space for productive activity that initiates a partnership with the public. Our model combines studio and exhibition platforms, offering artists flexible space in which to generate new work. With agency to determine the visibility of their project and the parameters of its presentation, Recess artists realize ambitious goals in dialogue with an inquisitive audience. Free and open to the public, Recess offers critical exposure for the artists we support while fostering an approachable environment that promotes valuable visual and intellectual interactions.
