- A private non-profit organization founded in 1991, the Governor's Institute on Substance Abuse has the mission of improving the health and well being of individuals, families, and communities by reducing the toll of substance abuse through education, research, and community partnerships. The GI supports the activities of the NC Practice Improvement Collaborative, a group that identifies and recommends evidence-based mental health, developmental disability, and substance abuse practices (interventions shown to result in high quality outcomes) to the Division of MHDDSAS. The GI also develops and delivers educational programming and technical support for (1) physicians and other healthcare providers; (2) behavioral health providers; and (3) agencies addressing the needs of homeless veterans. The GI has broad experience in a variety of prevention and treatment programs for children, adolescents and adults and a rich history of bringing diverse stakeholders together to address difficult problems that require multiagency cooperation and partnership.
