• The Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA (SPF-USA) was incorporated on September 24, 1990, in Washington, D.C., as a not-for-profit foundation under clause 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code with a 3 billion JPY endowment from the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Japan. In 1991, the Foundation acquired an office building at 1819 L Street in Washington, DC and the Board of Directors approved that the rental income be applied to fund current operations related to the library and other programs of the Foundation. The Foundation's initial mission, to promote understanding between the United States and Japan, was carried out by opening an art gallery and a library in December 1992.In 1997 the Foundation redefined their direction and as a result closed their art gallery, while instead developing projects to promote awareness of the Asia-Pacific region in the United States. From 1999 to 2009 the Foundation hosted the Asian Voices Seminar Series in Washington, DC with the support of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Tokyo. This seminar series was designed to provide a forum to present Asian viewpoints on regional and global issues that affect the US-Asia relationship. Currently the Foundation sponsors seminars and conferences on the US-Japan relationship while exploring a move into the broader DC think tank community.
