• The Steamship Historical Society's mission is to protect, preserve and share maritime heritage and history. The society was founded in 1935 by a group of like minded individuals, interested in the history and preservation of steamships. Beginning with a small core group of members in New York City, by the year 2000 the Society had eight Chapters throughout the United States. By 2009 the membership climbed to 2,800. SSHSA members reside in 49 of the 50 States, as well as in Canada, Europe and the Far East. In December of 1940 the idea of of a marine historical journal was raised among SSHSA members. The first issue of the journal called Steamboat Bill of Facts Relating to American Steamboats, Past and Present was published in 1940. Twenty-one subscribers were enrolled. With the April 1941 issue, Steamboat Bill became the official journal of the SSHSA. The journal grew into a dynamic publication that consisted of 256 pages per year, many in color, and included information concerning the history and operations of Engine Powered Vessels. Though the original focus was on wooden hulled excursion and/or sidewheel paddle steamers, the lens has since broadened to include all engine-driven vessels. In 2010, Steamboat Bill received a make-over to better reflect it's expanded content. PowerShips debuted in 2010, continuing a legacy of collecting, preserving and sharing maritime history and heritage.
