According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one in five Americans is affected by a mental health disorder every year. Women, it turns out, experience mental health instability even more. Were diagnosed with depression and other stress-related disorders at twice the rate of men. That means that its pretty much impossible not to be affected by a mental health problem, be it your own or that of someone you love. Despite its universality, our society stigmatizes mental illnessespecially mental illness of women. The Know Collective provides a safe space for women both online, in the form of this websitewhich is part editorial platform and part Q&A forumand offline, in the form of talk circlesintimate community gatherings where women come together to converse about specific topics such as the future of reproductive healthcare, the myth of the zero sum game, and the anxiety of managing your personal finances. The Know Collective is on a mission to ignite a national conversation about mental health by building a network of womens communities. We aim to reflect the dialogue of these intimate offline gatherings online in the form of personal essays, researched articles, and a digital forum (like Quora) where women can continue to ask and answer each others questions, anonymously or not, without the constraints of geography and time.
