• The Discovery Center is committed to building an equitable and just world where everyone has what they need to grow and thrive. We work in partnership with youth, families, schools, and communities to facilitate nurturing spaces where people can understand and challenge systemic racism and oppression.We work toward institutionalized equity in school systems. We were founded in 1992 by Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. Our focus is on youth from grades 4 to 8 and those who support them.We provide facilitated training and discussion for individuals, including students, teachers, administrators, parents, and community members on an internal, and interpersonal level, and include the context provided by examples of institutional, and ideological/cultural racism. Our programs are all connected and intended to be used together to create systems change:The Residential Program brings 5th and 6th grade students from Hartford and the surrounding suburbs for a diversity and inclusion, team-building, and academic experience to an overnight camp. Students attend the 3-day or 1-week-long program with their class during the academic year. Their teachers receive training to help extend the learning into the classroom. Leadership Workshops are designed to increase students' capacity to think critically about race and difference, build empathy, and identify equitable and non-equitable situations. EDIfy (Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) are for adults who work with youth, including teachers, school administrators and youth workers. Participants including the exploration of personal identities and beliefs and their impact on the vital work of inspiring students to learn how race, class, gender and other differences impact their work.Systems Change Using Data includes developing a revised School Climate Survey with an Equity Lens with and for the Manchester Public Schools working with noted race and equity education expert Dr. Paul Gorski, of EdChange.
