How often do you jump on social media? Once a week? Daily? Multiple times per day? Does it depend on the social media site?

Usage and engagement on social media sites continues to evolve. In 2014, Facebook remained the most popular social media site. In fact, 71% of internet users have a Facebook account. However, while engagement among users remained high, 70% of Facebook users engage daily and 45% access the site several times a day, the size of the site’s user base remained flat.

Some social media sites saw their user base increase in 2014.

  • Instagram was up 9%
  • Pinterest was up 7%
  • LinkedIn was up 6%
  • Twitter was up 5%

Daily usage also varies by site:

  • 49% of Instagram users login daily
  • 36% of Twitter users login daily
  • 17% of Pinterest users login daily
  • 13% of LinkedIn users login daily

If your products or services are targeted to young adults, Instagram is your site. Fifty-three percent (53%) of adults 18-29 years of age have an Instagram account. Pinterest still remains the most popular site among women with 42% of online women having an account. Fifty percent (50%) of college educated adults have a LinkedIn account.

With 52% of U.S. adults having accounts on more than one social media site, social media marketing continues to drive budgets and strategies.
