yahoo googleYahoo and Google have agree to a non-exclusive deal for Google to provide ads on Yahoo search results pages.
Yahoo has been partnering with Microsoft Bing for several years. Their agreement was renegotiated in March leaving the door open for Yahoo to bring on additional partners. Which they did on October 1, when the Google-Yahoo agreement went into effect.
While the partnership started on October 1, it was not publicized until Yahoo’s quarterly earnings results were released later in the month. The Google-Yahoo partnership is set to run approximately 3 years and expire in late 2018.
In order for the deal to go through, Yahoo and Google both had to agree to certain anti-trust provisions set forth by the Department of Justice. A similar deal between the two search providers was scrapped in 2008 due to DOJ concerns.
Google has left itself an out clause that states they can end the deal if “certain events” happen. What those events could be have not been disclosed.
The Yahoo-Google partnership is non-exclusive allowing Yahoo to continue its partnership with Bing while also using their own internal technology to provide search ads.
